Teaching–learning process
Teaching and learning are two inseparable and interdependent activities that together form the core of the educational process. In agricultural extension, teaching aims to bring desirable changes in the behaviour, knowledge, skills, and attitudes of farmers, while learning is the outcome of that teaching.
- Meaning and Definition of Teaching
Meaning
- Teaching is a systematic and planned activity through which a teacher stimulates, guides, and facilitates learning in learners. It involves communication of knowledge, development of skills, shaping attitudes, and helping learners adjust to their environment.
- Teaching is not merely telling or lecturing; it is a purposeful activity designed to bring about changes in behaviour.
Definitions
- Good (1959): Teaching is a process of arranging situations that make learning easier.
- Smith: Teaching is a system of actions intended to induce learning.
- Jackson: Teaching is an activity aimed at assisting learners to acquire knowledge and skills.
- Extension Education Perspective: Teaching in extension is the organized attempt to bring about desirable changes in the behaviour of rural people through learning.
Characteristics of Teaching
- It is purposeful and goal-directed
- It is interactive (teacher ↔ learner)
- It is both a science (method) and an art (creativity)
- It influences knowledge, attitudes, and skills
- It requires planning, communication, and evaluation
- Meaning and Definition of Learning
Meaning: Learning is the process through which individuals acquire new knowledge, attitudes, values, behaviours, and skills. It brings relatively permanent changes in behaviour through experience and practice.
Definitions
- Crow & Crow: Learning is the acquisition of knowledge and habits.
- Kimble: Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour resulting from experience.
- Skinner: Learning is a process of progressive behaviour adaptation.
- Extension Perspective: Learning is the change in farmer’s behaviour (knowledge, skill, or attitude) resulting from extension teaching.
Key Features of Learning
- It involves change in behaviour
- The change is relatively permanent
- It occurs through experience and practice
- It is an active process
- It is influenced by motivation, needs, and environment
- Learning Experience
Meaning
- A learning experience is the mental and physical reaction of the learner to a learning situation. It includes whatever the learner does, thinks, feels, or experiences in the process of learning.
- Learning experience is NOT what the teacher does; it is what the learner does that leads to learning.
Definition: A learning experience is the reaction made by a learner through seeing, hearing, doing, discussing, or participating, through which understanding and skill are gained.
Examples of Learning Experiences in Agricultural Extension
- Seeing a demonstration on seed treatment
- Participating in a field day
- Practicing fertilizer application
- Observing pest symptoms on crops
- Performing a skill (e.g., grafting, pruning)
Characteristics of Effective Learning Experiences
- They are purposeful and problem-oriented
- They are related to real-life situations
- They involve active participation
- They produce satisfaction and motivation
- They help learners apply knowledge in practice
- Learning Situation
- Meaning A learning situation is the environment or setting in which learning takes place. It includes all the conditions, elements, and factors that influence the learning process.
- Definition A learning situation is the combination of an instructor, learner, subject matter, teaching materials, and physical facilities, arranged in such a way that learning becomes possible.
Elements of a Learning Situation A good learning situation has five essential elements:
i) Instructor (Teacher/Extension Worker)
Must:
- Know the subject matter
- Be well-prepared
- Communicate clearly
- Encourage participation
- Be friendly, enthusiastic, and democratic
- Use appropriate teaching methods and aids
ii) Learner (Farmer/Student)
Should:
- Have a need or motivation to learn
- Show interest
- Be capable of learning
- Use information gained to solve problems
iii) Subject Matter
Must be:
- Relevant to the learner’s needs
- Based on real-life problems
- Up to date and scientifically sound
- Clearly presented and logically organized
iv) Teaching Materials and Equipment
Should be:
- Appropriate and needed
- Easily available
- Skillfully used
Examples: Charts, models, videos, demonstrations, tools, specimens
v) Physical Facilities
Must be:
- Comfortable and free from distractions
- Well-lighted and ventilated
- Spacious and properly arranged
- Suitable for group or individual learning
Teaching–Learning as an Integrated Process
Teaching and learning are not separate processes; they are two parts of a unified dynamic system.
- Teaching is stimulating and guiding
- Learning is responding and internalizing
In extension work, these two processes blend together through:
- Demonstrations
- Group discussions
- Field visits
- Trainings
- Farm and home visits
Effective teaching leads to effective learning → which results in behavioural change → which supports agricultural development.
