    About Lesson

     

    Introduction

    Mentha (commonly known as Mint) is a commercially important aromatic herb belonging to the family Lamiaceae. It is widely cultivated for its essential oil, which is rich in menthol and used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food, and perfumery industries.

     

    Botanical Classification

    • Botanical Name: Mentha arvensis (Japanese mint), Mentha piperita (Peppermint), Mentha spicata (Spearmint)
    • Family: Lamiaceae
    • Chromosome Number: 2n = 96
    • Origin: Europe and Asia

     

    Economic Importance

    • Mentha oil is used in medicines, confectionery, toothpaste, chewing gum, and cosmetics.
    • India is the largest producer and exporter of mentha oil.
    • The main menthol-producing states in India are Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Bihar.
    • It is a short-duration crop with high profitability.

     

    Climatic Requirements

    • Temperature: 20°C – 35°C (optimum for growth)
    • Rainfall: 100-120 cm is ideal.
    • Sunlight: Prefers a warm and humid climate with moderate sunlight.
    • Frost Sensitivity: Young plants are sensitive to frost.

     

    Soil Requirements

    • Grows well in well-drained sandy loam to clay loam soil with high organic matter.
    • Soil pH: 6.0 to 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
    • Requires good moisture-holding capacity but should not be waterlogged.

     

    Propagation Methods

    Mentha is propagated vegetatively through:

    1. Suckers (Stolons) – Preferred method for large-scale cultivation.
    2. Rooted cuttings – Used in nurseries for small-scale propagation.

     

    Land Preparation

    1. Deep ploughing (25-30 cm) is done to remove weeds and loosen soil.
    2. Application of organic manure (10-15 tonnes/ha of FYM or compost) to improve soil fertility.
    3. Leveling the field to ensure uniform water distribution.
    4. Formation of ridges and furrows for planting.

     

    Planting Time and Spacing

    • Planting Season: February to March (optimum), August-September (for ratoon crop).
    • Spacing: 40 cm × 20 cm (row-to-row and plant-to-plant distance).
    • Planting Depth: 5-7 cm.
    • Planting Material: 500-600 kg of stolons per hectare.

    • Nitrogen is applied in split doses for better vegetative growth.
    • Phosphorus and Potassium are applied as a basal dose.

     

    Irrigation Management

    • First irrigation immediately after planting.
    • Irrigation is required at 7-10 day intervals.
    • Avoid water stagnation as it can cause root rot.
    • Last irrigation one week before harvesting to enhance oil content.

     

    Weed and Pest Management

    • Hand weeding at 30 and 60 days after planting.
    • Mulching with straw or polythene helps suppress weeds.
    • Pre-emergence herbicides like Pendimethalin (1 kg/ha) control weed growth.

    Harvesting Time

    • First harvesting 90-100 days after planting.
    • Further harvests every 50-60 days (ratoon cropping).
    • Best time for harvesting: Early morning or evening to retain oil quality.
    • Leaves should be fully matured, and the crop should not be overgrown.

    Yield

    • Fresh herbage yield: 20-30 tonnes/ha
    • Mentha oil yield: 150-200 kg/ha

     

    Post-Harvest Processing

    1. Drying: The harvested crop is wilted for 6-8 hours to reduce moisture.
    2. Distillation: Steam distillation method is used to extract mentha oil.
    3. Filtration & Storage: The oil is filtered and stored in airtight containers
